Grandma Ferrese’s Pizza

DOUGH:

½ cup scalded milk (45-55 seconds in microwave)

¼ cup shortening

 1 tablespoon sugar

1 ½ teaspoon salt

½ cup water (lukewarm)

1 package dry granular yeast (dissolved as directed on package)

3+ cups of flour

TOPPING:

2 cups pizza sauce

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Meat of your choice

Combine milk, shortening, sugar and salt.  Cool by adding lukewarm water.  Add dissolved yeast; mix well.

Add flour; mix until dough is well blended.

Let rise until it doubles (about 1 hour).

Divide into 2 equal portions.  Roll out to fit 2 greased pizza pans.

Spread the dough with sauce, meat and cheese.

Bake at 400 degrees for 15-20 minutes.

Linda’s Change’s:

I usually bake at 350 or 375 degrees for 30 minutes.

Family History:

Momma used to make this for Rick and me any time of day or night before we were married.  Even if it was 10 at night she would make it.  Many times she didn’t let it rise and it still tasted great.  She would use cheddar cheese if she was out of mozzarella.

My kids always liked this recipe but it never tasted as good as Grandma Ferrese’s.  Katherine, however, does something (I don’t know what) and it tastes as good as Grandma’s!
